Xybots was developed by Atari, Inc. Games in 1987 as an arcade video game, then later released on other platforms. Xybots is a 3-Dimensional, 3rd-person perspective game in which players fight their way through a multi-level underground city made up of a series of mazes against a series of robots known as Xybots, whose mission is to destroy all mankind. A map of each level is displayed at the top of the video game screen.
At the end of each level, players can enter a shop where supplies and power-ups can be purchased with any coins they have collected. Some items are permanent, whereas others are temporary and must be replenished. Xybots classic arcade game also utilized an innovative split-screen display, allowing for two-player simultaneous play, a novel concept for the era.
